254<strong>Ashkenazi</strong> community, and in spite of all my efforts, I was unable toacquire it. <strong>The</strong> Hebrew science of linguistics also behaves like this;burying things and making them disappear, so that only a few of those whodeal with it dare to point out the immense debt that Modern Hebrew owesto Yiddish. We should take note that the dictionary of Even Shoshan, to itsdisgrace, fails to recognize any specific instance, expression or figure ofspeech in Modern Hebrew that has its origin in Yiddish. Regarding wordswhose origins are not from Yiddish, Ben Shoshan is careful to point out theorigin, for example with the word til he points out that its origin is Turkish,but the very existence of Yiddish is completely absent from the knowledgeof Avraham Even Shoshan. <strong>The</strong> Kibbutz movement strives to stress itsaccomplishments to everybody, and toward this need, it makes unpredentedefforts. But this movement looks, with great displeasure, upon any authorwho rises from its ranks and tries to describe the intimate workings of itsmembers critically. Every past is beholden to thisframework of time, and every present is inflated within it, including thepast and present of the ruling Labor movement. It appears that the motto ofthis movement is “distort the past, inflate the present and ignore the future.”<strong>The</strong> distortion of the past expresses itself in the twisting of the true essenceof the Jewish Diaspora, and in ignoring the contributions of hostile, andunfriendly, Jewish forces in the founding of the state.
