223the eyes of Nitzani. Our only role, in the present and in the future, is “tofinance”. In “Tribe and People” of the year 1954, a table of agriculturalsettlements in the State of Israel was published and, above it in a beautifulfont: “Settlements of the Sephardic and Mizrahi groups in Israel”. Thetable includes a long list of settlements that were founded in the early1950’s. The settlement that was founded through Ashkenazi knowhow, byAshkenazi pioneers and with Ashkenazi money was never mentioned, onlythat it was done by “Jews”. However, the settlements of Sephardo-MizrahiJews in the Land of Israel, in which there was great Ashkenazi investment, are described, in “Tribe and People” as Sephardo-Mizrahi settlements. Thedesire of the Sephardic leaders to see Ashkenaz fulfill its “financing role”in the State of Israel, and then leave it for the Sephardo-Mizrahim – is veryobvious, both from the words of Nitzani and from the table.Nitzani says even more obvious things in his later article (“Tribe andPeople” 5, 1960):The differences in the People of Israel, and its division into two majorcomponents – Ashkenazi and Sephardi – is rooted very deeply in thehistory of our people.
