it been accepted, it is likely that not only would the course of Hebrewhistory have been different but also the entire course of world historywould have been different. Had the Jews of Ashkenaz left, in theirmillions, for the empty territories of East Africa, it is likely that anti-Semitism would have been quashed and Hitler would not have risen topower. <strong>The</strong> rejection of the Uganda proposal is a black day, not only inthe history of the Jewish People but also in the history of Europe and theentire world. Moreover: <strong>The</strong>re is almost no doubt that had we founded anation in Eastern Africa, we would have acquired, sooner or later, also theLand of Israel. Everything could have been different had we only acceptedthe proposal, and the entire history of the world was likely to have turnedout differently. However, Hebrew Literature foiled the proposal that wasthe shared fruit of British generosity and the brilliance of Herzl. In itsfoiling of this wonderful proposal, Hebrew Literature had one single goalin mind: <strong>The</strong> protection of its own specific interests. It knew that adecision in favor of Uganda would be a decision against itself andtherefore, it brought about its failure. <strong>The</strong> needs of the <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> Peopleinterested it as much as a garlic peel. <strong>The</strong> Sixth Congress extended a longhelping hand to Hitler. It was there that the exit gates from Europe wereshut for the <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> People, and the gallows, upon which they would beexecuted, were erected. It was there that the foundations of Auschwitz andTreblinka were poured, and all that remained for Hitler was to finish thejob. At the Sixth Congress there was a battle between the politician Herzland the people of spirit, culture and prophecy etc. etc. from the studyhouses of Ahad ha’Am, Buber and Bialik. <strong>The</strong> “men of spirit” won andwhat was the result? <strong>The</strong> giving of an important card into the hands of thepowers of darkness that pushed for a world war, rivers of Jewish blood andmillions led to Auschwitz. This tragedy is a subject for dramatists such asDurrenmatt. <strong>The</strong>se “men of spirit” brought about a slaughter that dozens ofevil politicians were not able to accomplish. If only the world hadunderstanding, if only it could truly look deeply into history, and if only itcould understand the international ramifications that were known to resultfrom the decision of the Sixth Congress, for then it is likely that somebodywould have risen up to prevent the “men of spirit” from the possibility ofany political activity.
