First and foremost it was incumbent upon Ashkenaz todetermine that solutions to its problems would be managed not in thedestructive and underhanded ways of the Confederacy of Jewish Peoples,but within a framework that is purely and exclusively <strong>Ashkenazi</strong>. Mostimportantly: It was incumbent upon Ashkenaz to be wary of its historicinternal foe, the Sephardic leaders. After all that this sect had perpetratedupon Ashkenaz in the 17 th , 18 th and even the 19 th century, there was noreason for cooperation between Ashkenaz and them.On this point, there was an interesting development linked to the famousSephardic Jew, Moses Montefiore. <strong>The</strong>re is no doubt that his heart waspure and his intentions innocent as he worked for the benefit of the Jews ofRussia. <strong>The</strong> purity of heart, and the purity of intentions, of MosesMontefiore are beyond any doubt. But nevertheless, it is clear that thisfamous activist was not just a generic Jewish activist, but first and foremosta Sephardic activist, and it is clear that he was this way due to hisobligation to be a Sephardic activist. In this capacity, Sir Moses must havedone a bitter survey of Sephardic Jewry. He understood that, in the 17 thand 18 th centuries, this Jewry had great opportunities to be a guide andshepherd to <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> Jewry. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> Jews, blinded by the gloryof golden age Sephardic literature, saw themselves as inferior to Sepharadand could easily be led by its leaders. But, in their evil arrogance, theysquandered this wonderful opportunity and stabbed Ashkenaz in the back.In the meantime, all the historical developments were in favor of Ashkenaz.Its power continued to increase and the power of Sepharad continued toweaken. Moses Montefiore discerned these processes and worried thatSephardic Jewry would become, to world Jewry, like a withered limb and adespised tribe. In his quest to remove the walls of hatred from betweenSephardi and <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> Jewry, he encouraged mixed <strong>Ashkenazi</strong>-Sephardimarriages and, to every mixed couple, he promised a large monetary prize.But, with all the personal support of Sir Moses Montefiore, we shouldknow that his actions caused much more damage, than benefit, to the<strong>Ashkenazi</strong> People.
