224example: Yugoslavia is also comprised of several republics, noteworthyamong them the Macedonian Republic… <strong>The</strong> national question of thispeople was solved through the establishment of a Macedonian republicwithin the framework of a Yugoslavian state.2A sharp change of direction in tactics by the Sephardic leaders occurredafter the riots against the <strong>Ashkenazi</strong>m, which were perpetrated in WadiSalib, Haifa, under the leadership of David Ben Haroush, on July 8 th and 9 thof 1959. <strong>The</strong>re were no instances of Sephardic condemnation of the riots,or of the perpetrators, and even the publications of the various divisions ofMapai, which dealt with “ethnic groups”, failed to fully condemn thoseresponsible for the riots, but rather they found words to justify them.Sephardic leaders in Israel and the Diaspora, received news of the riotswith open joy. In the French newspapers, which have a degree of influenceover Sephardic leaders, there appeared headlines dripping with joy at thedownfall of Ashkenaz, and encouraging those responsible for the riots. InAlgeria, an important center of Sepharad and its leaders, the riots werejoyously celebrated in Zionist clubs. And it gets even worse: Largemasses of Sephardo-Mizrahi Jewry, in the State of Israel, received news ofthe riots with joy and encouragement, as they emphasized that it is somesort of punishment that we “deserve”. This is the reward that we get afterten years of toil for the migration that brought these Sephardic masses tothe Land of Israel, which guaranteed they would have a demographicmajority and reduce us to minority status; this is the reward that we get forthe largest act of tribal solidarity ever accomplished in Jewish history.Wadi Salib influenced the tactics of Sephardic leaders in several ways. <strong>The</strong>deeds of David Ben Haroush let it be known that the effort to fit into thelife of the general Jewish People, that is to say, the <strong>Ashkenazi</strong> People,which began with Moses Montefiore, already accomplished what it couldand there is no more need for it; Ashkenaz had given to Sepharad, overtime, a central role among the positions within of the Confederacy ofJewish Peoples.
