252against their former partners without hesitation after they have extracted,from the triple alliance, all the tactical benefits that can be gained.<strong>The</strong> cruel imposition of the experimental, and the brutal rejection ofhistorical certainty, typifies the scene in the State of Israel. <strong>The</strong> incrediblescale of the experiments, and the unprecedented absurdity of the integrationof exiles and the revival of the Hebrew language, force the instigators ofthese projects to announce that they have ceased being experiments, thatthey have left the stage of doubt and danger, and have already reached thesafe haven of firm ground. But reality preaches against theseproclamations. Reality emphasizes over and over again that the threeexperiments remain experiments, and that their provisional nature has notonly failed to diminish with time, but to a certain extent has gotten evenmore pronounced. As long as the Hebrew language continues to dominatethe speech of the younger generation, and all official communication,doubts about its ability to constitute an effective linguistic tool for amodern nation continue to grow in the hearts of its helmsmen at theHebrew Academy and the upper echelons of literature. <strong>The</strong> civilization ofthe kibbutz accomplishes wonders in the fields of technology andsociology, but at the same time it is retreating in the central arena of itsbasic values. As a result of this, its faithful followers fear that theaccomplishments at the flanks come at a cost of the disintegration of itscentral arena. <strong>The</strong> Sephardo-Mizrahi masses fit in to the external fabric ofthe life of the nation, but they have shown no ability to penetrate, or tograsp, the deeper layers. <strong>The</strong> great powers of historical continuity, whichthe experiments pushed aside, in their unprecedented scale, did not becomeextinguished and did not descend into no-time. <strong>The</strong>y retreated in anorderly manner and built great, extensive and deep defensive outposts. <strong>The</strong>political and social field of the State of Israel is divided into two parts. Inthe upper layer, the forces of experimentalism rule and successfullyobliterate, with stubborn effort, the bunkers and pockets of historical forcesthat remain in this area. But at deeper levels historic continuity reigns withgreat power, and prevents the entry of the experimental. We get theimpression that the forces of historic continuity have decided to restrain the
