About the AuthorChristopher J. Mruk, PhD, was trained in general learning <strong>and</strong> cognitivepsychology at Michigan State University, where he received his undergraduatedegree in 1971, <strong>and</strong> in humanistic clinical psychology atDuquesne University, where he received his graduate degree in 1981. Hisfirst clinical position was working in a closed inpatient psychiatric unit atCottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, which led to supervising anoutpatient heroin addiction treatment program in Detroit. From there, hebecame a therapist in a 24-hour comprehensive psychiatric emergencyservice in Lansing, Michigan, which was one of the nation’s first modelsrecognized by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He thenprovided a wide range of psychological testing <strong>and</strong> therapeutic services invarious community mental health centers, which led to directing theCounseling Center at St. Francis College in Pennsylvania. After doingsome private practice, he now works as a consulting psychologist toFirel<strong>and</strong>s Regional Medical Center in S<strong>and</strong>usky, Ohio. He is licensed as aclinical psychologist in Ohio <strong>and</strong> Pennsylvania.Dr. Mruk’s academic experience includes more than 20 years ofteaching psychology <strong>and</strong> training mental health professionals. Currently,he is a full-time Professor of Psychology at Bowling Green StateUniversity Firel<strong>and</strong>s College in Ohio, where he has received the college’sDistinguished Teaching <strong>and</strong> its Distinguished Creative Scholarship awards.His publications include a number of academically oriented refereed articles,several invited chapters, <strong>and</strong> Zen <strong>and</strong> Psychotherapy: IntegratingTraditional <strong>and</strong> Nontraditional Approaches (Springer PublishingCompany, 2003), a book that he authored with Joan Hartzell, RN, MA.Dr. Mruk may be reached at cmruk@bgsu.edu.ii
