175Letter Nr. 50Paris, August 20, 1830Dear Sir!I received my subsidy through Mr. Lafitte on the 22 nd last month. I alsoreceived funds intended for library books and to cover the cost of thesurveyor's instruments ordered by colleague Wrześniowski. A few days laterwe witnessed several political disturbances 166 here, with the result that I couldnot take care of the tasks assigned to me before my departure /fulfilling thecommission sent to me/, and my departure from London has been delayed untilnow. The machinist Rochette, from whom colleague Wrześniowski hadordered the surveyor's equipment before his departure, had not received anydown payment, and therefore did not start to work until I came with themoney. Moreover, all commercial work moves very slowly, for the owners ofshops have not yet been able to re-assemble their dispersed workers insufficient numbers. It was my intention, and still is, to get to London as soonas possible; therefore, without waiting for the equipment, I paid Mr. Rochettethe 400 fr. sent for this purpose, the receipt for which is included in this letter.Mr. Pochette has taken upon himself the responsibility of sending thisequipment to you in Warsaw as soon as possible. I checked with him today, and he told me that he would do this within a week. The equipment ordered bycolleague Vincent Wrześniowski: alidade, eclimetre, calculateur de mrJeliński, pantometre y un metre en rouleaux, cost only 370 fr. The remainderof the 30 fr., after paying shipping charges, will be given to my formeruniversity colleague, a Master in Management, Louis Królikowski. He is livingin Paris, and he has agreed to send the money to the proper person as indicated166 He is speaking of the so-called "July Revolution" in Paris, 1830.
