I kept generally free of accidents on this journey. However,there was one accident in Poland, close to the Prussian border. I did notmention this earlier for fear of worrying you. The coach overturned and I hitmy leg sharply on a rock. However, after I soaked the leg well in Poznań, thepain was almost completely gone. Again, riding from Poznań to Berlin in thatcoach without springs, after an uncomfortable journey /made even more uncomfortableby what must be the worst pavement in the world, constructedoriginally for French artillery/ I was shaken up, and my head ached so badlyafter my arrival in Berlin, that it took several days of rubbing with liniment toease the pain. Nevertheless, these were only minor strains, hardly seriousenough to allow me to complain about my health in the course of the journey.In Paris I met several colleagues with whom I was once very close. Forme this had to be a very advantageous event. Not only did they provide mewith necessary information and the consolation I needed in the time of myinitial unbearable loneliness, but they also helped by advancing funds fornecessary expenses. I do not have time for even a passing mention of localnews items or points of interest in this letter. The New Year has come andgone and, as circumstances would have it, I was unable to send my letter toyou in time.At least now, at this late date, accept my best wishes... I flatter myselfthat you have been convinced long ago that I wish you well... I wish you thegreatest of happiness, good health, peace of mind, and strength of character toendure our temporary separation. The time will come when, to the evidence ofmy love for you from the beginning, I shall be able to add the total gift ofmyself, in due payment for your devotion and fidelity to me.May your feelings for me continue to be constant and sincere!
