679Letter Nr. 170[To V. Wielogłowski]Paris, July 15, 1839 931My dearest Valerian!Yesterday I went first to Ordęga and completed that business. I receivedten Dutch ducats which I exchanged for 116 francs and 14 sous, because theywere not all of the same weight. Then I wrote to the landlord, asking him toexpect me today between three and five.This morning I should have gone first to College Stanislaus; but afterlearning and guessing how I stood with the directors as a result of various rumorsand the influence of Jełowicki 932 and Kamocki, I preferred not to go.And so my main remaining hope was the Thayers 933 . What would you sayabout that? The presentiment of various serious consequences, especially inrelations with the Platers, caused me to waver badly. Consequently, I simplyprayed constantly, and asked for prayer. It crossed my mind to go to the landlordto try to reach and agreement with him, even though I had nothing in hand. I madeall kinds of plans for myself: how I would speak to him, etc.I went. All of my planning was in vain. I was practically a miracle! When Imet him, he was like wax, lik butter! He understands my position, trusts my goodwill to pay him, asks only for the promise that I will try, as far as possible, to payhim something. And so I did not even need to tell him what I had prepared to say.To whose prayer do I owe this?
