415Letter Nr. 92Paris, January 26, 1835To the editors of The New PolandOn January 10 th , your publication contained a list of commissioners togather votes for the organization and selection of a Committee 380 . By somemistake, undoubtedly, my name was included among those participating in theformation of this Committee. I have never participated in any such formation, Icould not participate, for I still know nothing about it. True, a month ago, JosephZaleski 381 showed me a circular issued by the institutions 382 , summoningcountrymen, who recognize the need for such a Committee among the emigrantsand wish to vote in the election of members, to signify by their signature that theywish to do so.Since last year’s election proved inconclusive, due to the indifference ofthe voters, I considered the summons to be valid. And so, I signed, but only asone wishing to vote for the Committee, not as one participating in some yetunknown formation 383 ... much less as a candidate.I ask you to make this correction.Bogdan Jański 384Paris, January 26, 1835.380 The Committee for Poles in Exile was organized by J. Lelewel and J.N. Janowski inSeptember, 1831, in Zakroczym, as a government in exile. It tried to set itself up in Paris as anautonomous government for the emigrants, but failed by reason of Universal disagreement.381 Joseph John Zaleski (1789-1864) - A soldier of the principality of Warsaw and of the PolishKingdom, the owner of Pietruszka near Kijów, insurgent, emigrant, a member of the UnitedBrethren, an external brother and benefactor of the new community of Bogdan Jański; constantcompanion of the poet J.B. Zaleski.382 A name for the emigrant centers in France.383 The secret left-wing among the emigrants, under the symbol of The New Poland, was trying touse this as a means to gain authority over the exiles. Without their being aware of it, the exileswould be asked to vote for a constitution drawn up by tile left-wing, the content of which wouldthen be presented to the people as obliging, by reason of the voting.384 The rough-draft has been preserved in CRR: Mss 8520/2.
