The project was started in Pittsburgh by Carnegie Mellon University professor Luis von Ahn (creator of<br />
reCAPTCHA) and his graduate student in 2005 where the graduated student Luis von Ahn had an idea<br />
of a game. The game was acquired in 2005 by Google and renamed Google Image Labeler. Then in<br />
2007 already titled Professor von Ahn had another idea. He realized that the people waste their time<br />
by typing the captchas and it could be beneficially used for digitizing books. This recaptcha project was<br />
bought by Google again in 2009. Then along with his Ph.D. student Severin Hacker they started to<br />
develop this project. Instead of g<strong>et</strong>ting people to do som<strong>et</strong>hing that feels like unpaid work they<br />
changed it into a learning experience.<br />
1. Description of objectives, expected and/or obtained results<br />
It is a free language-learning platform that inclu<strong>des</strong> a language-learning website and app along with a<br />
crowdsourced text translation platform and a language proficiency assessment center. Duolingo is adfree<br />
and offers all its language courses free of charge.<br />
The primary idea of Duolingo is very deep. It combines human and computing power to solve<br />
problems neither people nor computers could solve alone. Human computation is a growing research<br />
area that studies how to harness this combined power. The project is built to provide a free languagelearning<br />
site and, therefore, help millions of users to learn a foreign language.<br />
Its inventor said that giving people a language-learning app, akin to Candy Crush, makes it a b<strong>et</strong>ter b<strong>et</strong><br />
