16.13 SUMMARY OF LIMIT DESIGN PROCEDURE<br />

1. Compute the factored loads using the load factors given in Chapter 3:<br />

w u = 1.2D + 1.6L<br />

2. Determine the mechanism, plastic hinges, and factored moments M u .<br />

A plastic hinge in the maximum positive moment region.<br />

3. Design the critical sections using the strength design method.<br />

4. Determine the required rotation of plastic hinges.<br />

5. Calculate the rotation capacity provided at the sections of plastic hinges. The rotation capacity<br />

must exceed that required.<br />

6. Check the factor against yielding of steel and excessive cracking, that is, φM u /elastic moment<br />

at service load.<br />

7. Check deflection and cracking under service loads.<br />

8. Check that adequate shear reinforcement is provided at all sections.<br />
