[Excludes executions by military authorities. The Army (including the Air Force) carried out 160 (148 between 1942 and 1950, 3
each In 1954, 1955, and 1957, and 1 each In 1958, 1959, and 1961). Of the total, 108 were executed for murder (including 21
involving rape), 53 for rape, and 1 for desertion. The Navy carrie d out no executions during the period. See also H isto rica l

No. 337. Prisoners Executed Under Civil Authority—States: 1940 to 1981
[No executions took place in Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and
Wisconsin from 1940 to 1981. At no time during this period was the death penalty authorized in Alaska, Hawaii, Maine,
Minnesota, and Wisconsin; it was abolished in Michigan in 1983 and lapsed in North Dakota in 1975 through statutory expiration;
in the remaining two States, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, the death penalty was authorized during most of the period. At
no time since the beginning of statehood in 1959 have Alaska or Hawaii authorized the death penalty]
