The export declarations collected by<br />

Customs are processed each month to<br />

obtain data on the movement of U.S.<br />

merchandise exports to foreign<br />

countries. Data obtained include value,<br />

quantity, and shipping weight of exports<br />

by commodity, by country of destination,<br />

by Customs district of exportation, and<br />

by mode of transportation.<br />

Shipper’s Export Declarations are<br />

required to be filed for the exportation of<br />

merchandise valued over $500. Customs<br />

officials collect and transmit the<br />

documents to the Bureau of the Census<br />

on a flo w b a s is to r d a ta c o m p ila tio n .<br />

Probability sampling is used in the<br />

compilation process for low-value<br />

shipments i.e., shipments to Canada<br />

vatued $501-51,999 which account for<br />

less than 1 % of total exports.
