AHB1210 – Chinese Herbology II<br />

Units: 3<br />

This is the second in a four-course series on evidence-based Chinese herbal medicine <strong>and</strong> provides students<br />

with the necessary foundation <strong>for</strong> more advanced study later in the DACM program. This course advances to<br />

explore the relevant botany concepts, properties <strong>and</strong> safe clinical application of core medicinals in each<br />

therapeutic category. The categories covered include Herbs that Clear Heat, Herbs that Drain Dampness,<br />

Aromatic herbs that Trans<strong>for</strong>m Dampness, Herbs that Expel Parasites, Substances <strong>for</strong> Topical Application,<br />

Substance with Unacceptable Toxicity, <strong>and</strong> Substances from Endangered Species. Students will apply core<br />

knowledge to the evaluation of clinical case studies <strong>and</strong> will choose corresponding herbs <strong>for</strong> cases.<br />

Prerequisites: AHB1110<br />

Restrictions: DACM program only<br />

AHB1310 – Chinese Herbology III<br />

Units: 3<br />

This is the third in a four-course series on evidence-based Chinese herbal medicine <strong>and</strong> provides students<br />

with the necessary foundation <strong>for</strong> more advanced study later in the DACM program. After coverage of core<br />

seminal concepts such as the historical <strong>and</strong> philosophical bases of Chinese herbal medicine, the course<br />

advances to explore the relevant botany concepts, properties <strong>and</strong> safe clinical application of core Medicinals<br />

in each therapeutic category. The categories covered include Herbs that Dispel Wind Dampness, Herbs that<br />

Regulate Qi, Herbs that Regulate Blood, Downward Draining Herbs, Herbs that Relieve Food Stagnation,<br />

Emphasis is placed on the clinical application of core substances. Students will apply core knowledge to the<br />

evaluation of clinical case studies <strong>and</strong> will choose corresponding herbs <strong>for</strong> cases.<br />

AHB1410 – Chinese Herbology IV<br />

Units: 3<br />

This is the fourth in a four-course series on evidence-based Chinese herbal medicine <strong>and</strong> provides students<br />

with the necessary foundation <strong>for</strong> more advanced study later in the DACM program. After coverage of core<br />

seminal concepts such as the historical <strong>and</strong> philosophical bases of Chinese herbal medicine, the course<br />

advances to explore the relevant botany concepts, properties <strong>and</strong> safe clinical application of core Medicinals<br />

in each therapeutic category. The categories covered include Herbs that Warm the Interior <strong>and</strong> Expel Cold,<br />

Tonifying Herbs, <strong>and</strong> Herbs that Stabilize <strong>and</strong> Bind. The students are also introduced to concepts of herbal<br />

pairing (Dui- Yao) <strong>and</strong> commonly used herbal pairs in clinical practice. Some common herb <strong>and</strong> drug<br />

interactions will be introduced as well, Emphasis is placed on the clinical application of core substances.<br />

Students will apply core knowledge to the evaluation of clinical case studies <strong>and</strong> will choose corresponding<br />

herbs <strong>for</strong> cases.<br />
