APP203 – Oriental Medicine Diagnosis<br />

This course covers the four major diagnostic methods in Oriental Medicine (inspection, auscultation/olfaction,<br />
inquiry <strong>and</strong> palpation) <strong>and</strong> provides the introduction to differentiation of patterns according to Eight<br />
<strong>Principles</strong>, Qi-Blood-Body Fluids, Pathogenic Factors, Six Stages, Four Levels, <strong>and</strong> Three Burners.<br />

APP302 – Oriental Medicine Theories II<br />
Units: 3<br />
This course covers pattern differentiation according to the Internal Organs (Zang-Fu), combined patterns of<br />
the Zang-Fu, Five-Element patterns, <strong>and</strong> principles of treatment.<br />

APP401 – OM Critical Thinking I (Family Medicine)<br />
Units: 3<br />
This course, OM family medicine, introduces the diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment of disease according<br />
to the principles of Chinese medicine <strong>and</strong> integrative medicine from a primary care provider perspective.<br />
Students will learn acupuncture, herbal, <strong>and</strong> other Chinese medical modalities used to treat commonly seen<br />
diseases in family medicine practice. It includes respiratory, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, pediatrics, <strong>and</strong><br />
geriatric diseases.<br />

APP511 – Tui-Na/Massage/Acupressure<br />
Units: 2<br />
This is a clinical skills course emphasizing the traditional Chinese Physical Therapy methods of Tui-<br />
Na/Massage, which also include neurological <strong>and</strong> musculoskeletal examination, diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment.<br />
Students learn to select examination procedures that correlate with a patient’s history, to per<strong>for</strong>m those<br />
procedures, to integrate findings with historical data, <strong>and</strong> to document relevant clinical findings. Student will<br />
also learn manipulation methods <strong>for</strong> treating structural <strong>and</strong> soft tissue injuries <strong>and</strong> dysfunction.<br />

APP608 – Practice Management<br />
Units: 3<br />
This course is designed to teach the practice management skills required by the graduating acupuncturist in<br />
preparing to practice. The student will learn skills including: analyzing locations <strong>and</strong> area demographics,<br />
creating a practice plan, developing various financial accounting systems, networking with other health care<br />
providers <strong>and</strong> communicating with the patient to assure treatment compliance <strong>and</strong> continuity of care. Issues<br />
of patient documentation, as well as doctor liability, are discussed. Strategies <strong>for</strong> utilizing inter-professional<br />
collaborative care are presented as well. The course includes lecture presentations, class discussion,<br />
audiovisual presentations <strong>and</strong> self-directed course projects.<br />
