Failure Policy<br />
(SCU Policy 5.5.5.2)<br />
Students who failed a course will neither receive credit <strong>for</strong> the course nor will the units or hours be counted<br />
towards graduation. Students who failed a course may be eligible <strong>for</strong> a retake examination <strong>and</strong> must follow the<br />
prescribed st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> procedures <strong>for</strong> course failures.<br />
Multiple Failures<br />

If a student received a failing grade in two subjects during a single trimester, his/her case shall be referred to the<br />
College Dean. The student may, depending upon his/her past academic record, be suspended or dismissed from<br />
the College or may be permitted to continue on a probationary status which will be in effect <strong>for</strong> at least one<br />
trimester. Future enrollment eligibility will be contingent upon completion <strong>and</strong> passing of the failed subjects <strong>and</strong><br />
a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above.<br />
If failure has been in three or more subjects, the student shall be dismissed or placed on academic suspension<br />
<strong>for</strong> a period of time not less than one trimester. A recurrence of three or more failures in one trimester <strong>for</strong> a<br />
student will result in dismissal without opportunity to return to that College within the University. If suspended,<br />
the student will be placed on academic probation <strong>for</strong> not less than one term, or until they successfully achieve<br />
accumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater. Exception may be made at the discretion of the Vice President <strong>for</strong> Academic<br />
Affairs in conjunction with the relevant College Dean.<br />
Sequential<br />
(SCU Policy 5.5.5.2.1.2)<br />
Students failing a course will be contacted by letter stating the ramifications of such a failure <strong>and</strong> the tutoring<br />
services available. Students failing the same course twice will be in<strong>for</strong>med by letter from the College Dean’s<br />
Office that they have been placed on Academic Probation, that they must receive academic counseling, <strong>and</strong> that<br />
further failure in the course will result in suspension or dismissal.<br />
Future enrollment eligibility will be contingent upon completion <strong>and</strong> passing of the failed subjects <strong>and</strong> a<br />
cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above.<br />
Students failing the same course three times will be notified of the suspension or dismissal from the College<br />
Dean through consultation with the Academic Review <strong>and</strong> Support Committee. Exceptions to the regulation will<br />
be made at the discretion of the Vice President <strong>for</strong> Academic Affairs in conjunction with the relevant College<br />
Dean.<br />
Academic Probation<br />
(SCU Policy 5.5.5.3.2)<br />
Any student whose term grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0 will be placed upon academic probation. Any<br />
student who fails the same course twice will also be placed on academic probation. The academic progress of<br />
