AHB1711 – OM Nutrition/Diet<br />

This course will introduce the integration of herbal medicine into food therapy <strong>and</strong> relate the Oriental<br />
Medicine Theory by applying the criteria of the ancient adage "prevention is more important than cure". This<br />
course will introduce the concept of self-care through knowledge on medicinal herbs <strong>and</strong> learn the<br />
connection between various ailments <strong>and</strong> the food intake. The basic theory of this course is to underst<strong>and</strong> the<br />
methods of using medicinal herbs together with daily diet to nourish, adjust, <strong>and</strong> regulate the body according<br />
to the seasonal changes <strong>and</strong> internal patterns to prevent common ailments.<br />

AHB1720 – Shang Han Lun<br />
Units: 2<br />
In this course students will study Zhong-Jing’s classic medical text Shang Han Lun (Febrile Diseases Due to<br />
Invasion of Cold). Students will learn to differentiate exogenous diseases <strong>and</strong> syndromes according to the<br />
theory of the six meridians <strong>and</strong> the subsequent determination of treatment with emphasis on Chinese herbal<br />
prescriptions discussed in the text.<br />

AHB1810 – Wen Bing Xue<br />
Units: 2<br />
In this course students learn the classic theories <strong>and</strong> differentiations of acute febrile diseases as discussed in<br />
the Wen Bing (Warm Febrile Diseases) utilizing the theory of wei, qi, ying, <strong>and</strong> xue to analyze pathogenesis<br />
<strong>and</strong> differentiate syndromes. Students will learn to identify the transmission <strong>and</strong> trans<strong>for</strong>mation of febrile<br />
diseases <strong>and</strong> thus determine appropriate treatment plans.<br />

AHB1910 – Jin Gui Yao Lue<br />
Units: 2<br />
This course explores the main theoretical concepts <strong>and</strong> herbal prescriptions of Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential<br />
Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) as they apply to clinical use. Students will learn differential diagnosis of<br />
disease, herbal prescription writing <strong>and</strong> modification. Case studies <strong>and</strong> clinical experience will be used to<br />
demonstrate clinical applicability.<br />
