BN0405 – Biochemical Nutrition<br />
Units: 3<br />
This basic nutrition course focuses on the following aspects of human nutrients: chemistry, food sources,<br />
bodily storage, mobilization, function, daily requirement, interaction, <strong>and</strong> signs of deficiency or toxicity.<br />
Biochemical mechanisms of the action of nutrients are emphasized. <strong>Principles</strong> of nutrition, dietary reference<br />
intakes, various dietary guidelines, <strong>and</strong> nutrition facts versus fads are studied. Correlation of nutrition with<br />
other basic <strong>and</strong> clinical sciences, <strong>and</strong> the role of nutrition in clinical practices are mentioned wherever<br />
appropriate. Course instruction includes lectures, classroom exercises, <strong>and</strong> discussion of practical nutrition<br />
topics.<br />

BN0510 – Clinical Nutrition<br />
Units: 4<br />
This course is devoted to the diagnosis of nutrition related illnesses <strong>and</strong> the integration of nutritional<br />
protocols in the treatment of clinical conditions. Students learn to use nutritional assessment in clinical<br />
practice. Emphasis is placed on the specific conditions most frequently encountered by healthcare<br />
professionals. Prevention <strong>and</strong> dietary management <strong>for</strong> care will be discussed. Course instruction includes<br />
lectures, guest presentations, case presentations <strong>and</strong> discussion, as well as independent <strong>and</strong> team based<br />
learning exercises.<br />

CBN0601 – Pharmacology/Toxicology<br />
Units: 2<br />
This lecture course covers the various drug groups <strong>and</strong> poisonings which Health Care Professionals are most<br />
likely to encounter in their practice. The pharmacodynamics <strong>and</strong> pharmacokinetic principles of drugs,<br />
pollutants <strong>and</strong> poisons will be discussed. Available resources in relation to poisons <strong>and</strong> adverse effects of<br />
drugs will be introduced. The nature of the hazardous substances in the environment will be explained.<br />
Students will also learn the potential effects of drugs <strong>and</strong> poisons in altering or masking presenting symptoms<br />
in the clinical setting.<br />

CBS0106 – History of Healthcare<br />
Units: 1<br />
This course explores an abbreviated history of the healing arts including acupuncture <strong>and</strong> Oriental medicine,<br />
chiropractic, medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy <strong>and</strong> homeopathy. The course also compares <strong>and</strong> contrasts the<br />
core philosophy <strong>and</strong> treatment methods adopted by these systems with an emphasis on interprofessional<br />
collaboration. Further, it provides a timeline of their origin <strong>and</strong> growth along with the major contributors to<br />
these systems.<br />
