2.3.8 Local - Lifespan of Shewalton Landfill Site: The Shewalton landfill site is operated in line with the Pollution, Prevention and Control regulatory regime enforced by SEPA. In order to comply with this regime there is a need to continue investment within the site particularly in respect of gas management and energy recovery, leachate management and the capping of cells as they become full. It will also be necessary to construct new cells at Shewalton to receive waste, subject to these works the site is anticipated to reach capacity by 2016/17. 2.4 Waste Composition 2.4.1 The table below sets out the amount of waste collected and the recycling rate for each of the key municipal waste streams managed by the <strong>Council</strong>. This has identified the following:- Household - Kerbside Collections:- � � Up to 21.2% of the waste collected through the grey bin service can be recycled or composted through full use of the existing kerbside recycling collection services. Up to 7.8% of the waste collected through the grey bin service can be recycled or composted through full use of the facilities provided at Household and/or Neighbourhood Recycling Centre’s. 30
� � � � � Up to 38.4% of the waste collected through the grey bin service can be recycled or composted but will require improvements to the existing services and the introduction of additional services. 32.6% of the waste collected cannot be diverted from the residual stream. Household Waste Recycling Centre's:- Up to 59.6% of the total residual waste deposited can be recycled through full use of the existing facilities in place. Up to 19.8% of the total residual waste deposited can be recycled or re-used but will require improvements to the existing facilities and the introduction of additional facilities. 20.63% of the total residual waste cannot readily be recycled. 2.4.3 Due to the relative small amount of waste collected from businesses direct analysis has not been undertaken. However national studies have indicated the following trends: � � � Up to 41% of the total waste collected through the service can be diverted through full use of the existing recycling and collection services. Up to 42% of the total waste collected through the service can be recycled or composted but will require improvements to the existing services and the introduction of additional services 16.5% of the total waste collected cannot readily be recycled. 2.5 Actions for Delivery Following consideration of the drivers for change and the information collated from detailed analysis of the residual waste managed by the <strong>Council</strong> the key actions for delivery detailed within the strategy are summarised below: 2.5.1 Increase the level of Education and Promotion Effective education and promotion is vital to the success of the services provided. The demographic profile of the area indicates that high levels of education and promotion are required to support residents in changing waste management behaviours.
