INFORME ICCAT 2012-2013 (I)8.8 SAI - PEZ VELAEl pez vela (Istiophorus platypterus) tiene una distribución circumtropical. Basándose en la información delciclo vital, en las tasas de migración y en la distribución geográfica de las capturas, ICCAT ha establecido dosunidades de ordenación para el pez vela Atlántico, Este y Oeste (SAI-Figura 1). La primera evaluación queestimó con éxito puntos de referencia para el stock occidental y para el stock oriental de pez vela se llevó a caboen 2009 (Anon. 2010a).SAI-1. BiologíaLas larvas de pez vela son voraces y se alimentan de crustáceos del zooplancton en sus primeras fases dealimentación, pero rápidamente cambian a una dieta de larvas de peces. Las preferencias de temperatura del pezvela adulto parecen situarse en un rango de 25º-28º C. Un estudio emprendido en los estrechos de Florida y en elGolfo de México meridional indicaba que las preferencias de hábitat de los peces vela marcados con marcas porsatélite se situaban principalmente en los 20~50 m superiores de la columna de agua. Los datos de marcadotambién indicaban movimientos comunes a corto plazo hasta profundidades de más de 100 m, con algunasinmersiones de hasta 350 m. El pez vela es la más costera de todas las especies de istiofóridos y los datos demarcado convencional sugieren que se mueve en distancias más cortas que los demás istiofóridos (SAI-Figura2). El pez vela crece rápidamente y alcanza una talla máxima de 160 cm para los machos y de 220 cm para lashembras, éstas últimas alcanzan la madurez en 155 cm. El pez vela alcanza una edad máxima de al menos 17años.El pez vela desova en una amplia zona durante todo el año. En el norte, se han detectado evidencias de desove enlos estrechos de Florida y en aguas de las costas de Venezuela, Guyana y Surinam. En el Atlántico sudoeste eldesove tiene lugar en aguas de la costa meridional de Brasil entre 20º y 27º Sur; y en el Atlántico este, en aguasde Senegal y Côte d’Ivoire. Sin embargo, la temporada de desove puede diferir entre regiones. Desde losestrechos de Florida hasta zonas en aguas de Guyana, el pez vela desova en el segundo semestre del año,mientras que en el Atlántico sudoriental y el Atlántico tropical oriental desova al final y al principio del año.SAI-2. Descripción de las pesqueríasEl pez vela es capturado como especie objetivo por las flotas de recreo y artesanales costeras y, en menormedida, es capturado como captura fortuita en las pesquerías de palangre y de cerco (SAI-Figura 1).Históricamente, muchas flotas palangreras comunicaban las capturas de pez vela conjuntamente con Tetrapturusspp. En 2009, el Comité separó estas capturas (SAI-Tabla 1). Se siguen comunicando al Comité capturashistóricas de istiofóridos sin clasificar, lo que dificulta la estimación de la captura del pez vela. Los informes decaptura de países que se sabe históricamente que desembarcan pez vela continúan teniendo lagunas y cada vezhay más evidencias ad hoc de desembarques no comunicados en otros países. Estas consideraciones respaldan laidea de que la captura histórica del pez vela ha sido infradeclarada, especialmente en tiempos recientes en losque más y más flotas capturan pez vela como captura fortuita o se dirigen a esta especie.Las declaraciones presentadas a ICCAT estiman que la captura de Tarea I de 2011 ascendió a 1.057 t y a 566 t,para los stocks oriental y occidental, respectivamente (SAI-Figura 3). Las capturas de la Tarea I de pez velapara 2011 son preliminares, ya que no incluyen las declaraciones de todas las flotas.SAI-3. Estado de los stocksICCAT reconoce la existencia de dos stocks de pez vela en el Atlántico, los stocks oriental y occidental. Cadavez hay más evidencias de que debería considerarse una estructura de stock alternativa, con un stock occidentalnorte y un stock oriental/sur. Hasta la fecha no se han realizado evaluaciones de stock basadas en la opción deuna estructura de stock alternativa, sin embargo, realizar estas evaluaciones debería ser una prioridad para elfuturo.En 2009, ICCAT realizó una evaluación completa de ambos stocks de pez vela del Atlántico (Anon. 2010a)mediante varios modelos de producción y utilizando diferentes combinaciones de índices de abundancia relativa(SAI-Figura 4). Está claro que sigue existiendo una considerable incertidumbre respecto a la situación de ambosstocks, sin embargo, muchos resultados de los modelos de evaluación presentaban evidencias de sobrepesca y deque los stocks están sobrepescados, más en el Este que en el Oeste. Aunque algunos resultados sugieren que elstock del Oeste se encuentra en un estado saludable, pocos sugieren lo mismo para el Este. Se ha evaluadotambién que el stock oriental es más productivo que el stock occidental y probablemente capaz de proporcionar134
