INFORME ICCAT 2012-2013 (I)8.9 SWO-ATL - PEZ ESPADA DEL ATLÁNTICOLa última evaluación de pez espada del Atlántico se llevó a cabo en 2009 (Anon. 2010d). Otra informaciónrelacionada con el pez espada del Atlántico se presenta en el Informe del Subcomité de Estadísticas, incluidocomo Apéndice 7 en este Informe del SCRS y las recomendaciones relacionadas con el pez espada del Atlánticoque se incluyen en la sección 17.SWO-ATL-1. BiologíaEl pez espada (Xiphias gladius) es miembro de la familia Xiphiidae y pertenece al suborden Scombroidei. Puedealcanzar un peso máximo que supera los 500 kg. Presentan una amplia distribución por todo el Atlántico y elMediterráneo. En la zona del Convenio de ICCAT, las unidades de ordenación de pez espada a efectos deevaluación son: un grupo separado en el Mediterráneo, y grupos en el Atlántico norte y sur separados en 5ºN.Esta separación de stocks está respaldada por recientes análisis genéticos. Sin embargo, los límites precisos entrestocks son inciertos y se espera que la mezcla sea mayor en el límite que se encuentra en la zona tropical. El pezespada se alimenta de una gran variedad de presas incluyendo peces de fondo, peces pelágicos y de aguasprofundas, así como invertebrados. Se cree que se alimentan en toda la columna de agua, y a partir de recientesestudios de marcado, se cree que realizan amplias migraciones verticales nictémeras.El pez espada desova principalmente en aguas cálidas tropicales y subtropicales occidentales durante todo el año,aunque se ha comunicado estacionalidad en algunas de estas zonas. Durante los meses de verano y otoño seencuentran en aguas templadas más frías. Los peces espada jóvenes crecen muy rápidamente, alcanzandoaproximadamente 140 cm LJFL (mandíbula inferior a la horquilla) en la edad 3, pero crecen lentamente a partirde entonces. Las hembras crecen más rápido que los machos y alcanzan una talla máxima mayor. Los estudiosde marcado han demostrado que algunos peces espada viven hasta 15 años. La edad del pez espada es difícil dedeterminar, pero aproximadamente el 50% de las hembras se consideran maduras en la edad 5, con una talla deunos 180 cm. Sin embargo, la información más reciente indica una talla y edad de madurez menor.SWO-ATL-2. Indicadores de las pesqueríasDebido a la amplia distribución geográfica del pez espada del Atlántico (SWO-ATL-Figura 1), tanto en las zonascosteras como en alta mar (que se extiende sobre todo entre 50º N y 45º S), esta especie está disponible paramuchas naciones pesqueras. La SWO-ATL-Figura 2 muestra las capturas totales estimadas para el pez espada delAtlántico norte y sur. Las pesquerías de palangre dirigido de UE-España, Estados Unidos y Canadá han operadodesde finales de los años cincuenta o principios de los sesenta, y las pesquerías de arpón existen desde laspostrimerías del siglo XIX. Otras pesquerías dirigidas al pez espada son las de Brasil, Marruecos, Namibia, UE-Portugal, Sudáfrica, Uruguay y Venezuela. Las principales pesquerías que obtienen pez espada de formaoportunista o como captura fortuita son las flotas atuneras de Taipei Chino, Japón, Corea y UE-Francia. Lapesquería de palangre dirigida a los túnidos comenzó en 1956, y desde esa fecha ha operado en todo el Atlántico,con importantes capturas fortuitas de pez espada durante la captura de túnidos. La mayor parte de las capturas delAtlántico se realizan con palangre de deriva superficial. Sin embargo, se utilizan otros muchos artes, como las redesde enmalle tradicionales en aguas de la costa de África occidental.El Grupo examinó el documento SCRS/2012/022 que describía la presencia de pez espada (1,5 a 2,65 m) enaguas de la costa noruega (58 a 70º latitud N) desde 1967 a 2011. Durante este periodo de 44 años, se observaronen total 25 peces. Desde los 70 se ha producido un aumento en la abundancia que fue atribuido por los autores ala Oscilación Multidecadal del Atlántico (AMO). El Grupo señaló que la relación entre la temperatura y laabundancia de pez espada estaba respaldada por relativamente pocos puntos de datos y que la mayor abundanciade presas podría también estar relacionada con el aumento en la abundancia de pez espada. No estaba claro en eldocumento si la capacidad de detectar la presencia de pez espada era constante a lo largo del tiempo o qué tiposde arte estaban implicados.Total del AtlánticoEn 2011 la captura estimada del total del Atlántico (desembarques más descartes muertos) de pez espada (Nortey Sur incluyendo los descartes muertos) (25.599 t), es semejante a la captura comunicada en 2010 (24.208 t).Dado que un pequeño número de países no ha comunicado todavía sus capturas de 2011 y debido a que sedesconoce el nivel de capturas no comunicadas, esta cifra debe considerarse provisional y sujeta a una revisiónposterior.144
