RESUMEN EJECUTIVO SBF8.11 SBF- ATÚN ROJO DEL SURLa CCSBT es la encargada de evaluar el estado del stock del atún rojo del Sur. Cada año, el SCRS revisa elinforme de la CCSBT para conocer las investigaciones sobre el atún rojo del Sur y las evaluaciones de stockrealizadas. Estos informes están disponibles en la CCSBT.173
INFORME ICCAT 2012-2013 (I)8.12 SMT - PEQUEÑOS TÚNIDOSSMT-1. GeneralidadesLos pequeños túnidos incluyen las siguientes especies:- BLF Atún aleta negra (Thunnus atlanticus)- BLT Melvera (Auxis rochei)- BON Bonito (Sarda sarda)- BOP Tasarte (Orcynopsis unicolor)- BRS Serra (Scomberomorus brasiliensis)- CER Carita chinigua (Scomberomorus regalis)- FRI Melva (Auxis thazard)- KGM Carita lucio (Scomberomorus cavalla)- KGX Scomberomorus sin clasificar (Scomberomorus spp.)- LTA Bacoreta (Euthynnus alletteratus)- MAW Carita oeste africano (Scomberomorus tritor)- SSM Carita (Scomberomorus maculatus)- WAH Peto (Acanthocybium solandri)- DOL Dorado o lampuga (Coryphaena hippurus)El conocimiento acerca de la biología y pesquerías de pequeños túnidos es muy fragmentario en varias zonas.Además, la calidad de los conocimientos es muy diferente según la especie de que se trate. Esto se ha debido engran parte a que las flotas atuneras del Atlántico perciben a menudo a muchas de estas especies como especies deescasa importancia económica en comparación con otros túnidos y especies afines, y a las dificultades a la horade realizar un muestreo en los desembarques de las pesquerías artesanales, que componen una importanteproporción de las pesquerías que explotan este recurso. Con frecuencia, las grandes flotas industriales descartanlos pequeños túnidos en la mar o los venden en mercados locales mezclados con otras capturas fortuitas,especialmente en África (SCRS/2009/147). Muy pocas veces se registra la cantidad capturada en los cuadernosde pesca, sin embargo los programas de observadores de las flotas de cerco han facilitado recientementeestimaciones de capturas de pequeños túnidos (Amande et al., 2010).Los pequeños túnidos tienen una gran importancia desde el punto de vista socioeconómico, ya que sonimportantes para muchas comunidades costeras en todas las zonas y son la principal fuente de alimento. Muchasveces no se evidencia su valor socioeconómico debido a la infraestimación de las cifras totales, generada pordificultades en la recopilación de datos mencionadas antes. También existen problemas estadísticos debidos a laidentificación errónea. Las especies de pequeños túnidos pueden alcanzar altos niveles de captura y valores enalgunos años.La colaboración científica entre ICCAT, Organizaciones Regionales de Pesca (ORP) y países de diferentesregiones resulta esencial para avanzar en el conocimiento de la distribución, biología y pesquerías de estasespecies.SMT-2. BiologíaEstas especies se encuentran ampliamente distribuidas en aguas tropicales y subtropicales del océano Atlántico,y varias de ellas también en el mar Mediterráneo y mar Negro. Algunas especies se extienden también hastazonas más frías, como el océano Atlántico septentrional y meridional. Con frecuencia forman grandescardúmenes junto con otros túnidos o especies afines pequeños en aguas del litoral y en alta mar.Generalmente, los pequeños túnidos tienen una dieta muy variada y muestran preferencia por los pequeñospelágicos (clupeidos, mújol, Carangido, etc.). Estas especies se alimentan también de crustáceos, moluscos ycefalópodos. Muchas de estas especies son presa también de túnidos grandes, marlines y tiburones. El período dereproducción varía según la especie y la zona, y en las zonas oceánicas, el desove tiene lugar generalmente cercade la costa, donde las aguas son más cálidas. La tasa de crecimiento estimada actualmente para estas especies esmuy rápida en los dos o tres primeros años y después se ralentiza a medida que estas especies alcanzan la talla deprimera madurez. Se dispone de muy pocos estudios sobre patrones de migración de los pequeños túnidosdebido a las dificultades prácticas que se plantean a la hora de manipular y marcar estas especies.174
