RESUMEN EJECUTIVO SAIun RMS mayor. Es probable que el stock del Este esté sufriendo mayor sobrepesca y lo más probable es que sehaya reducido por debajo del nivel que produciría el RMS más que el stock occidental. Los puntos de referenciaobtenidos con otros métodos llegan a conclusiones similares.El examen de las tendencias recientes en la abundancia sugiere que ambos stocks, oriental y occidental, sufrieronsu mayor descenso en la abundancia antes de 1990. Desde 1990, las tendencias en la abundancia relativa entranen conflicto entre diferentes índices; algunos índices sugieren descensos, otros aumentos y otros no muestranninguna tendencia (SAI-Figura 4). El examen de las frecuencias de talla disponibles para una gama de flotasmuestra que la talla media y las distribuciones de talla no presentan tendencias claras durante el periodo para elque se dispone de observaciones. En el pasado se ha obtenido un resultado similar para los marlines. Aunque esposible que, al igual que en el caso de los marlines, esto refleje el hecho de que la talla media no es un buenindicador de la presión pesquera para los istiofóridos, también podría reflejar un patrón de presión pesqueraelevada durante el periodo de observación.SAI-4. PerspectivasLos stocks occidental y oriental de pez vela podrían haberse reducido hasta tamaños de stock por debajo deB RMS . Existe una considerable incertidumbre sobre el nivel de reducción, particularmente para el Oeste, ya quelos diversos ajustes del modelo de producción indicaban que la ratio de biomasa B 2007 / B RMS estaba tanto porencima como por debajo de 1,0. Actualmente, tres Partes contratantes de ICCAT(Brasil, Canadá y Estados Unidos) ya están obligando a utilizar o fomentando el uso de anzuelos circulares ensus flotas de palangre pelágico. Además, debería considerarse la reducción de la mortalidad por pesca del pezvela en las pesquerías no industriales.El Comité manifestó inquietud ante la comunicación incompleta de capturas de pez vela, en particular de losaños más recientes, porque esto aumenta la incertidumbre en la determinación del estado del stock.
