Phillips ∗SUMMARYIn 1989 the American Library Association Presi<strong>de</strong>ntial Committee on Information Literacy <strong>de</strong>finedinformation literacy as a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information isnee<strong>de</strong>d and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectiv<strong>el</strong>y the nee<strong>de</strong>d information". 1 Withtoday's increasingly complex environment of information choices, individuals must learn to useinformation to sustain lif<strong>el</strong>ong learning while applying critical analysis and reasoning. Many states,school districts, state university systems, and local institutions have <strong>de</strong>v<strong>el</strong>oped information literacycompetency standards. Accreditation agencies in the U.S. inclu<strong>de</strong> information literacy outcomes intheir standards. The five standards and twenty-two performance indicators found in the ACRLStandards of 2000 provi<strong>de</strong> a framework for assessing the competency of the information literateindividual. The presentation will discuss some examples of how higher education institutions areincorporating information literacy into the curriculum's content, structure, and sequence. Theoutcomes h<strong>el</strong>p faculty and librarians to <strong>de</strong>v<strong>el</strong>op assessment instruments to measure stu<strong>de</strong>nt progresstoward information literacy.
