34increased student information literacy skills and confidence along with an unexpected benefit ofgreater collaboration between librarians and the faculty. 6At the University of Oklahoma a science librarian and a microbiology faculty member collaboratedto incorporate information literacy into the course curriculum of an upper-division geomicrobiologycourse. The course was considered ideal for integrating an information literacy program because itrequired students to use information literacy skills to find, evaluate, and present information relatedto a refereed journal article. The results of the program suggested that the ACRL Objectives wouldhelp to further refine the program. Use of ACRL Objectives may also contribute to greatercorrelation between the librarian and the faculty member's evaluations of student information skills. 7The University of Texas at Austin developed an online tutorial, TILT (Texas Information LiteracyTutorial), that includes an introduction and three modules: Module One covers selecting appropriateinformation sources; Module Two teaches methodical and efficient searching of library databasesand the Internet; Module Three helps students understand how to evaluate and cite any information. The modules conclude with a short quiz, the results of which can be printed or emailed. 8TILT is nota substitute for library instruction but a supplement. Students take the tutorial before they come forlibrary instruction. TILT is available for use with any program after the user agrees to the terms ofthe Open Publication License (http://www.tilt.lib.utsystem.ed). It then becomes an open sourceprogram that can be adapted to meet the needs of the institution. 9 Other schools such as SanFrancisco State University, Radford University, James Madison University, etc. have alsodeveloped web-based tutorials as a part of information literacy programs. At the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Library, a study compared two groups of students, one using the traditional print workbook and the other group an electronic workbook similar to theACRL Information Literacy Competency StandardsFor Higher Education And Their Application
