(DEP) newly-elected chairman, Hatip Dicie,<br />
who has m<strong>et</strong> with adverse reaction<br />
both from his party and the nation because<br />
of his pro-PKK (o~tla':Ved Kurdistan<br />
Workers Party orpamlatlOn) speech<br />
<strong>de</strong>livered at his party s first emergency<br />
convention last Sunday, <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d Wednesday<br />
to remain silent and not to make a<br />
statement.<br />
:While Dicle claimed thatthe press had<br />
misled the p~blic by distorting his<br />

In a statement to the TDN Dicle<br />
claimed that his party had had a ~agnificent<br />
convention, however some of the<br />
media had tried to cast a shadow over<br />
it. He said thatthe message given by the<br />
convention was one of peace and brotherhood.<br />
He al,leged that some circles were<br />
thre~tel1lng tne DEP's integrity, Dicle<br />
contmued that <strong>de</strong>p~ties or party spokesmen<br />
selected by him and hiS colleagues<br />
would make statements on behalf at the<br />
party.<br />
He s,aid thatthe accusation that he had<br />

w~s an unjust accusation. A DEP <strong>de</strong>puty<br />
said that hardly any of lhe DEP <strong>de</strong>puties<br />
had approved of the speech ma<strong>de</strong> by DicI~<br />

During his speech at the convention<br />
Dicle claimed that the PKK was not a ter~<br />
rorist organization but a political party,<br />
and that the military wing of the PKK<br />
could serve as a local <strong>de</strong>fense unit in the<br />
ev~nt of peace prevailing. He also<br />
clamled thatthe Kurdish mailer could not<br />
be solved without the PKK.<br />

ANKARA- At least 10 people were woun<strong>de</strong>d following<br />
an explosion at a coffee house in the southern port city of<br />
Adana on Wednesday,. the Anatolia.n~ws agency reported.<br />
The news agency SaId one of the lßJured was apoliceman<br />
and that the blast occurred after three uni<strong>de</strong>ntified people<br />
l~ft a parcel un<strong>de</strong>r a table insi<strong>de</strong>. Witnesses said the explosIOn,occurred<br />
about an hour after the group left the building<br />
..föitial reports said one of the victims was 15'years old<br />
and had lost both legs in the explosion: .<br />
Other victims were b<strong>et</strong>ween the ages of 14 and 16. No<br />
one has claimed responsibility for the attack.<br />
In two separate explosions in the Southeast, meanwhile,<br />
five people died and seven others were injured.<br />
Local officials said that a village minibus travelling near<br />
the town of Eruh in Siirt province hit a land mine. Three<br />
people were killed in that explosion.<br />
In the Ancak district of Elazlg, another village minibus<br />
bit a land mine leaving two people <strong>de</strong>ad and seven others<br />
woun<strong>de</strong>d. Officials suspect tfiat the mines were planted by<br />
the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has<br />
been waging a violent war on Ankara since 1984. More<br />
than Il,000 people have been killed in this campaign.<br />

I~~~NBUL-Police in Istanbul arrested a senior Kurdish<br />
polItICIan on Tuesday, and a court on Wednesday placed<br />
t~o television newsmen into prison. The two cases were<br />
lInked to the ~urdish dispute in southeast Turkey.<br />
!he Ana!olIan news agency, quoting secunty officials,<br />
saId the polIce had arrested Ibrahim Aksoy secr<strong>et</strong>ary-general<br />
of the pro-Kurd}sh Democracy Party' (DEP), for two<br />
speeches lie ma<strong>de</strong> In Konya and Adana cities earlier this<br />
year.<br />
It was not imm~di~tely clear what charges he faced. The<br />
DEP has 17 <strong>de</strong>puties In the 450-member nationallegislature.<br />

Erhan :\~yI!dlz and reporter Ali Tevfik Berber 0 the<br />
popular teleVISIon news program "Antenna" had been arrested<br />
and sent to prison.<br />
