ANKARA- The -Democracy Party's
(DEP) newly-elected chairman, Hatip Dicie,
who has met with adverse reaction
both from his party and the nation because
of his pro-PKK (o~tla':Ved Kurdistan
Workers Party orpamlatlOn) speech
delivered at his party s first emergency
convention last Sunday, decided Wednesday
to remain silent and not to make a
statement.

misled the p~blic by distorting his
speeches and thiS was why he had decided

hiS party due to the negative impact of his

In a statement to the TDN Dicle
claimed that his party had had a ~agnificent
convention, however some of the
media had tried to cast a shadow over
it. He said thatthe message given by the
convention was one of peace and brotherhood.

selected by him and hiS colleagues

During his speech at the convention
Dicle claimed that the PKK was not a ter~
rorist organization but a political party,
and that the military wing of the PKK
could serve as a local defense unit in the
ev~nt of peace prevailing. He also
clamled thatthe Kurdish mailer could not
be solved without the PKK.

Bomb blast wounds at
least 10 people inAdana

ANKARA- At least 10 people were wounded following
an explosion at a coffee house in the southern port city of
Adana on Wednesday,. the Anatolia.n~ws agency reported.
The news agency SaId one of the lßJured was apoliceman
and that the blast occurred after three unidentified people
l~ft a parcel under a table inside. Witnesses said the explosIOn,occurred
about an hour after the group left the building
..föitial reports said one of the victims was 15'years old
and had lost both legs in the explosion: .
Other victims were between the ages of 14 and 16. No
one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In two separate explosions in the Southeast, meanwhile,
five people died and seven others were injured.
Local officials said that a village minibus travelling near
the town of Eruh in Siirt province hit a land mine. Three
people were killed in that explosion.
In the Ancak district of Elazlg, another village minibus
bit a land mine leaving two people dead and seven others
wounded. Officials suspect tfiat the mines were planted by
the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has
been waging a violent war on Ankara since 1984. More
than Il,000 people have been killed in this campaign.

I~~~NBUL-Police in Istanbul arrested a senior Kurdish
polItICIan on Tuesday, and a court on Wednesday placed
t~o television newsmen into prison. The two cases were
lInked to the ~urdish dispute in southeast Turkey.
!he Ana!olIan news agency, quoting secunty officials,
saId the polIce had arrested Ibrahim Aksoy secretary-general
of the pro-Kurd}sh Democracy Party' (DEP), for two
speeches lie made In Konya and Adana cities earlier this
year.
It was not imm~di~tely clear what charges he faced. The
DEP has 17 deputies In the 450-member nationallegislature.
In a separate rep?rt! Anatolia said on Wednesday that froducer
Erhan :\~yI!dlz and reporter Ali Tevfik Berber 0 the
popular teleVISIon news program "Antenna" had been arrested
and sent to prison.
The t~~ were detained on Tuesday for spreading propaganqa
aImlßg to turn the people against compulsory military
se~lce. Akylldlz and Berber are to be tried at a chief of staff
ffillIt~ court while Aksoy is expected to appear at a state
secunty court.
