ANKARA- Turkey accused the Human Rights
Watch's 1993 annual report on Turkey of being
biased and attempting to "give PKK legitimacy
by branding it as a fighting side, rather than a terrorist
organization."
Foreign Ministry Acting spokesman Ferhat
Ataman said in his weekly press conference
Wednesday that the. report was inspired by the
Helsinki Watch reports which held certain prejudices
against Turkey.
Ataman also accused the report of ignoring the
existence of terrorism in the country.

"Meanwhile, it is amazing that they are against
the CMUK, which is considered as a reform proposal
and includes articles that are against torture
and custody periods which were accepted by European
Human Rights Commission," he added.

Arrestation en Syrie du chef du PKK, selon la presse turque
ANKARA, 16 déc (AFP) - Le chef du Parti des travailleurs du Kurdistan
(PKK, séparatiste), Abdullah Ocalan dit "Apo" qui réside généralement è Damas,
a été arrêté par les autorités syriennes, affirme la presse turque de jeudi.
L'arrestation du chef de la rebellion kurde en lutte armée contre Ankara
depuis 1984 aurait eu lieu sur ot~dre du président syrien Hafez Al-Assad, selon
ces informations. Il serait détenu par les services secrets syriens
(Moukhabat~at)•
Interrogé jeudi matin par des journalistes sur ces affirmations des
quotidiens turcs Hurriyet et Veni Gunaydin, le chef de la diplomatie turque
Hikmet Cetin, a affirmé ne pas pouvoir confirmer l'information.

Apo aurait demandé à se rendre en France, affirme par ailleurs le
quotidien Veni Gunaydin qui ajoute toutefois que les autorités syriennes
auraient refusé de transmettre cette demande à Paris.
