Meanwhile, Mustafa ~~ekçi, president of t~e Contemporary
Journalists' A~soclatiOn.(~GD), and Ne~rru Tanyola),
president of the Turkish AssociatiOn of Journalists, both said
the move was unaccep~able. Turkey's Press Counci.1Ch~irman
Oktay Ek~i sent a message to the DGM expressmg similar
views.
"We demand the immediate release of the detainees," Ekmekci
said.
. "We call upon all constitutional institutions to respect the
freedom of the press," Tanyolac said.
Turkey's Human Rights Association (!HO), the CGD Istanbul
office, Cukurova Journalists' Association and a large
number of leftist or pro-Kurdish magazines have all denounced
the action. The newspaper, seen as a mouthpiece
for the PKK, has been banned several times.
Last month, the Istanbul DGM twice ordered closure of
Özgür Gündem for 15 d~ys for publishing an interview with
PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan and other items considered
sympathetic to the Kurdish insurgency. Özgür Gündem continued
publishing pending Ii decision by the appeals court.
