Although holding to the original idea, as to approach and aims, of “identifying excellence in the planning of working environments and at the same time promoting and spreading the culture of quality and innovation in workplaces”, the second us award proposed a few substantial alterations: first of all the entry to projects carried out in 2008/09 or still in progress, not only in Italy but also in Europe and, secondly, a new subdivision of the admitted categories; the special sections were added to the two chief ones, “Interior Design” and “Architecture” for the working environment, two special sections were added concerning less substantial aspects from the structural and functional point of view, yet most important from the perceptive and emotional point of view. As a matter of fact, the two sections wood@work (sponsored by Ahec) and color@work (sponsored by Akzo Nobel) aim at bringing out the sensory quality of textures and colours: factors considered of the greatest importance in the subjective definition of “environmental quality” Over one hundred entrants, and about 20% of them had to be excluded because unconformable, mainly for they had been carried out before the term or outside the geographic area provided for by the announcement, or for clear formal mistakes or lack of information. As provided for by the announcement, the covers – two covers for this special issue! – were dedicated to the designs, that carried off first prize in the categories Interior Design and Architecture; the winning designs are published in the first pages – with two equal third for the category Architecture – coming with the jury’s reasons, followed by other designs subdivided by category. We deemed it proper, however excluding them from the shortlist of the possible winners, to point out as “Non-competing” some noteworthy projects, conscious of quality and environmental impact, yet not in keeping with the categories or geographic areas provided for, or excluded upon the customer’s specific request.
