Library in a deconsecrated place
of worship
An accurate restoration to rivive the complex
of San Giorgio in Poggiale. The refurbishment
has changed the interiors of a church built from
1589 to 1633 and now deconsecrated, into an
art library. The project is a unison dialogue with
the ancient architectures and the artistic and
book heritage, including also books on the
Bologna area, art, manuscripts, incunabula,
books published in the sixteenth century, prints
and engravings placed between aisles.

Oak wood is the originator and lead of the
harmony chosen for the flooring, furniture units
and the scenographic, tower-shaped revolving
door. Wood-bricks in solid, waxed raw oak, laid
at split-levels emphasize the longitudinal dimension
of the aisles. In the nave there is an especially
designed platform raised on more levels, that
brings to the fore the main reading and reference
room. At the entrance, there is the most original
component of the design, a tower used as revolving
door, formed by 42, superimposed rings, each
consisting of 10 “bricks” in blocks of solid firwood
in the same hue as the floor. The project provides
also for a heat/cold insulation system, revolving
door and lighting system inside the totem. ■
