Summary
The society of the Middle Ages and the early modern age might be characterized as a
society based on three cornerstones: manor, Church, and pub. This article deals with
the Church and its situation in the 18 th century Vidzeme (Livland). Namely, the author
explores the economic status of the countryside pastors of the Lutheran Church in this
western province of the Russian Empire.
Vidzeme and its inhabitants suffered greatly during the Great Northern War (1700– 1721),
and it was the Lutheran Church that was probably most affected by the aftermath of the
war. The churches were destroyed, and the number of members of the parishes decreased.
In the 18 th century about half of the pastors were newcomers from Germany. The land
of the parsonage and natural taxes that were usually fixed constituted the income of
pastors, while the housing and firewood were free of charge. Additional income
played a very important role in the household of pastors: supplementary income from
baptism, confirmation, marriage, funerals, etc. This income differed among the parishes,
depending on the demographic situation. There were many poor parishes in Vidzeme in
the 18 th century (especially along the coast); at the same time, the larger countryside
parishes offered good enough income to make the position of the pastor prestigious and
profitable.
