A morte
quarto onde haviam estado o Primeiro Ministro e Lady Bruton. Não havia mais ninguém lá. O
quarto estava vazio. “The party’s splendour fell to the floor, so strange it was to come in alone
in her finery” 233 . Frente à morte, a
vazio do quarto.
What business had the Bradshaws to talk of death at her party?
A young man had killed himself. And they talked of it at her party –
the Bradshaws talked about death. He had killed himself – but how?
Always her body went through it, when she was told, first, suddenly,
of an accident; her dress flamed, her body burnt. He had thrown
himself from a window. Up had flashed the ground; through him,
blundering, bruising, went the rusty spikes. There he lay with a thud,
thud, thud in his brain, and then a suffocation of blackness. So she
saw it. But why had he done it? And the Bradshaws talked of it at her
party! 234
Segundo o
autor, “the undefended self is seen in Septimus Warren Smith who becomes everyone’s victim because he
cannot use, even temporarily, the self-righteous clarity found in normal life. His insanity was triggered by the
death, during the War, of his friend, Evans. He believes he looked upon Evan’s death with indifference, yet
what he actually does is to realise the public’s indifference [....] Thus, when Septimus feels nothing, he is
looking upon his friend’s death with the eyes of the world, and the eyes of the world drive him insane”.
APTER, T. E. Self-Defense and Self-Knowledge.The Function of Vanity and Friendship in Virginia Woolf.
In: WARNER, Eric (ed.). Virginia Woolf. A Centenary Perspective. New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1984. p.
Idem.
