ABSTRACT
This dissertation deals with the analysis of the temporal tensions lived by two
characters of Virginia Woolf’s novel, Mrs Dalloway. In this narrative, Septimus Warren
Smith and Clarissa Dalloway suffer the effects of three different temporalities – historical,
chronological and affective. The historical temporality is particularly referred to the First
World War and its consequences, the chronological one refers to the sound of the Big Ben as
a form of power that produces the pattern of habit and the affective temporality refers to the
functioning of memory, which gives an access to the quality time of the durée. Since the
tensions lived by both characters come from their particular experiences, they relate to the
temporality of the affect. Septimus’ trajectory is the result of a tension with the historical
temporality and Clarissa’s trajectory results from her tension with the chronological
temporality. The main theoretical authors used to conceive the notions of time, whom make
possible the construction of the analysis related to the paths of each character, are André
Comte-Sponville, Walter Benjamin, Georg Simmel and Henri Bergson.
