SUMMARY: Th e occurr ence and tra ns latio n of rep etition are c rucial i n the
trans lat ion proc es s and pro vide i ns ight into the practical account of transl atio
n phenomena. Chinua A c hebe’s Thing s F all Apa rt is a triumph of repetition
in i ts own l angu age. Its tran slation into French b y M ichel Ligny i s a piece
of effronte ry. Thi s paper anal yses the tra ns lation o f repetiti on s as part of
comic, mu sic al, symbolic and aesthetic inventory of devices in t he French
tr an slation of Things Fall Apart. Th e a nalysis of the tre atme nt of repetition
i n Things Fal l A part is s upported by examples ex tracted fr om the original
and translate d ve rs ions of the text. The paper concl u des that i f tra nslation
of r epe titions is to be anythin g b eyond a pi ec e of “ sense d ata”, its t ranslatio
n into th e target l an g uage and cul tu re shou ld project th e musical,
comic, aesthet ic, linguisti c an d cultural image in the targ et te xt.
