An interview with Ivan Čolović by Aleksandra Đurić Bosnić
The Culture of Interspace
1. How do you interpret Rolan Bart’s stance
on the ideal state of socialness, according to
which it manifests itself as a simultaneous
existence and “humming” of countless
meanings, which never acquire the finite
form of a sign...
If you’re referring to the Bart’s expression frisson
du sens, which we usually translate as “tremor of
meaning”, then we’re talking about a term to which
Bart attributed great importance, relating it to his
interest in the “natural” in a society, the process of
the naturalisation of socialness, of ideology first of
all, which he addressed in the theoretical conclusion
of his “Mythologies”. Unlike ancient Greeks from the
times of the myths, described by Hegel as the people
amazed by the tremor of the meaning of nature,
he noticed that he himself, as a man in a historical
time, is amazed by the tremor of the meaning in
society and in language. Yes, that tremor can mean
openness, dynamism, uncertainty. Whatever the
case, it is clear that, in hindsight, Bart is today more
often referred to in relation to post-structuralism
than to structuralism.
2. In your opinion, what are the preconditions
for and the consequences of the abuse of
culture in closed societies?
I think that the prevailing understanding
of culture today is such that it benefits the closed
societies more than the open ones. In other words,
the prevailing understanding of culture is what’s
closing the societies, the societies are closed because
raison d’être of their institutions, the state above all,
is based on the idea of a culture as a closed system.
The same is true for some attempts to replace the
negative aspects of monistic models by pluralistic
ones, such as multiculturalism. Namely, these
models often retain the essentialist concept of culture
as a closed, autonomous and autochthonous system
of values, and the effort is aimed at establishing
the relations of tolerance and respect between
such cultures, without challenging the ideological
(nationalist) theory according to which they exist
separately, like Leibnitz’s monads. The wars for the
creation of independent countries on the territory of
Yugoslavia were largely inspired by the idea that the
peoples of Yugoslavia belong to radically different,
irreconcilable cultures, so the wars were presented
