engl. / At 60 years the cable car Albonabahn is
an elderly lady. It has been taking avid winter
sports fans and panorama-loving hikers up to
the Albona ridge since 1957. In all those years
the lift system saw quite a few innovations as
well as highs and lows – La Loupe remembers
the beginnings of the popular cable car.
Erich Bertholt, trained mechanical engineer and first operations
manager, remembers the time before Albonabahn: “For
passionate skiers Albona soon became a famous name. Some
people were taken up to the Albona plateau from Zürs in a
helicopter, others made their way up on skins.” Even though
there had long been plans to develop infrastructure on the
Albona, the single chair lift was only realised in 1956.
The construction was initiated by Emil Walch (of Hotel
Mondschein), Hans Steiner (Hotel Post) and then-mayor of
Klösterle, Karl Brändle. After some bureaucratic hurdles and
complicated negotiations, the day finally came in 1957: on 13
April of that year the first ride over the two sections and up to
the Albona ridge celebrated its premiere.
