The Battle for Vienna<br />

Waltz,the court riding academy, and Sacher cake? Yes, it is all available in all its splendour. But the old clichés<br />

are no longer enough when describing Vienna. For decades the metropolis has missed almost every trend, and<br />

rather occupied itself with the faded glory of its Habsburg past. Now the town has awoken from its deep sleep,<br />

and is catching up on lost opportunities at high speed. And the specialist sports retail is actively involved …<br />

Not only is Vienna popular among tourists and<br />

trend setters, it is also Austria’s top specialist<br />

sports retail metropolis. Especially topics<br />

such as outdoor and bikes push the branch. And<br />

Vienna’s specialist sports retail’s splendour reaches<br />

all the way to Graz, among others, as, for example,<br />

the city’s oldest mountain sports retailer Bergfuchs.<br />

Others, such as the Scandinavian large-scale retailer<br />

XXL, are soon going to follow suit to the pioneer ….<br />

Viennese specialist retail is thereby sunning itself in<br />

a healthy climate after the once strong dependence<br />

on snow sports has significantly been reduced.<br />

Not that the ski and snowboard business will be<br />

replaced, on the contrary: Austria is and will remain<br />

a winter sports nation. Sports retail was especially<br />

able to profit from that during the last good winter.<br />

But many retailers additionally gain points and can<br />

thereby attract winter sports fans, too, with all-year<br />

round sports disciplines such as hiking, and trend<br />

sports such as biking.<br />

With an annual turnover of 607 million, Intersport<br />

Austria was able to increase the previous<br />

year’s result by 13 per cent. Especially the city stores<br />

are booming but so is the rental business. All the<br />

important industries are in positive double figures<br />

(Bike +33%, Outdoor +23%, Ski Alpine +18%). The<br />

head of the association Mathias Boenke relates<br />

great expectations to the e-bike topic, which were<br />

already “true sales hits” during the last season, and<br />

have now been promoted to “lifestyle product of the<br />

year”. And that’s no wonder with an increase in sales<br />
