the Organization informed the 1540 Committee of the designation of a<br />

regional coordinator for the Central American Integration System beginning<br />

in October.<br />

At the G8 Summit held in Deauville, France, in May 2011, Heads of<br />

State and Government decided to renew the Global <strong>Part</strong>nership against the<br />

Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction beyond 2012. The<br />

Global <strong>Part</strong>nership—Assessment and Options for Future Programming, 88<br />

adopted in Deauville, identifies four priorities for the future, including the<br />

facilitation of the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004).<br />

The Committee continued cooperation with the Security Council<br />

Committees established pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989<br />

(2011), 89 as well as 1373 (2001) 90 and 1988 (2011), 91 and their experts,<br />

including through joint or coordinated outreach activities.<br />

Transparency and outreach<br />

Considerable progress was made during 2011 to enhance transparency<br />

of the work and achievements of the 1540 Committee. The Committee and<br />

its experts continued to reach out to civil society to generate wider awareness<br />

of the requirements of resolution 1540 (2004) and to further facilitate its<br />

effective implementation.<br />

In September, the 1540 Committee conducted its first visit to a State at its<br />

invitation. The one-week visit to the United States helped the Committee gain<br />

a deeper understanding of measures taken by the United States to implement<br />

resolution 1540 (2004). In 2011, the Committee also received invitations to<br />

visit Albania, Croatia and Madagascar.<br />

Political declarations and other initiatives<br />

In addition to his participation in key intergovernmental meetings<br />

on disarmament, the United Nations Secretary-General remained actively<br />

engaged in nuclear disarmament efforts, particularly in his continued outreach<br />

to civil society. In 2011, the Secretary-General addressed the Global Zero<br />

Summit in London, the Conference Promoting the Global Instruments of<br />

Non-proliferation and Disarmament organized by Japan and Poland, and an<br />
