Olympic
gold
As east London’s topsoil is churned
before vanishing beneath the 2012
Olympic Park, archaeologists are
rubbing their hands at the finds
transforming our understanding of
London’s past. Peter Watts joins the dig
108 METROPOLITAN
Aquatic Centre
Evidence of an Iron Age
settlement was unearthed on
the site of the Aquatic Centre,
where 4th-century pottery was
found. Four skeletons were also
discovered here in separate
graves. They have been removed
for further investigation by the
Museum of London.
Des vestiges d’un village de
l’Âge de fer (poteries du IV e
siècle) ont été découverts sur
le site du Centre Aquatique.
Quatre squelettes ont aussi été
exhumés. Ils ont été envoyés au
Museum of London pour des
études plus approfondies.
Olympic Stadium
A Roman coin has been found
on the Olympic Stadium site,
buried behind a river wall that
may have been built and used
by the Romans. The coin has
been dated to AD330-335, the
time of the Roman Emperor
Constantine II.
Une pièce romaine a été mise
à jour en dégageant le mur de
soutènement d’un canal sans
doute creusé par les Romains.
La pièce datait de l’an 330-
335, l’époque de l’empereur
Constantin II.
An early
19th-century
wooden boat has
been discovered at
the junction of the
Pudding Mill River
and the River Lea on
the stadium site.
This was potentially
used on a larger
boat or small ship as
a fast, elegant water
taxi. It was later
rebuilt as a gun punt
for wild fowling on
the lower River Lea.
Un bateau du
début du XIX e siècle
a été découvert
au confl uent des
rivières Pudding
Mill et Lea sur le
site du stade. Il
pourrait s’agir de
l’élégante annexe
d’un plus grand
navire. Il a ensuite
été transformé en
barge pour la chasse
au gibier d’eau
dans l’embouchure
de la Lea.
