“People think that if it’s not old then it’s not archaeology. But once something’s gone it’s gone” doing archaeology in that sort of environment – we’re not in the business of killing ourselves.” The contamination was so high in some areas that soil had to be taken from the site and put through a special dirt-washing machine. This was not the only environmental challenge faced by the archaeologists. Nick Bateman, the MOLA manager in charge of the archaeology work, explains, “We were in huge trenches, sometimes six or seven metres deep, and they would be fi lling with water. We had water coming up from the ground and down from the rain. We were pumping constantly because water is the enemy of archaeology – and this site is saturated.” Water is the theme that unites the Lea Valley’s past and present. “You have to go back to the end of the last ice age, around 12000 BC, when the glaciers retreated,” says Bateman. “Most of the London area was covered in thick post-glacial forest, except in the margins of 112 METROPOLITAN large watercourses. This was where the Lea met the Thames. In those days, the Thames was wider – it stretched all the way to just south of the Olympic site. So the settlements we found were at the junction of two rivers. “The Lea wasn’t a single river but a series of braided channels, with marshes, lagoons and lakes, covering a wide area. This also fl uctuated over time; marsh would become dry land and dry land would become marsh. It’s a very attractive ecosystem. Prehistoric people could exploit both forest and water. That’s why people were drawn to live in the area throughout the Neolithic era.” “It was a hugely challenging environment,” adds Tyler. “I know why these people lived here, but it can’t have been much fun. The threat of fl ooding was constant. But these people clearly valued the area highly and didn’t go away. Je me souviens d’avoir assisté à un forage. D’abord, on a senti une odeur métallique, puis un liquide orange foncé bouillonnant a empli la tranchée. Nous ne savions pas ce que c’était. Cela fait partie des aléas de l’archéologie, mais nous ne sommes pas là pour risquer nos vies. » Parfois, la pollution était telle que la terre a dû être extraite du site et lavée dans une machine spéciale. Mais ce n’est pas le seul défi auquel les archéologues ont été confrontés. Nick Bateman, le directeur du MOLA chargé des fouilles, explique : « Nous étions dans des tranchées de six ou sept mètres qui se remplissaient d’eau. Nous pompions constamment, car l’eau est l’ennemie de l’archéologue. » Cet élément est omniprésent dans l’histoire passée et actuelle de la vallée de la Lea. « Il faut remonter à la fi n de l’ère glaciaire, 12 000 ans avant J.-C., dit Nick Bateman. Londres était en grande partie couverte de denses forêts postglaciaires, à l’exception des berges des grands cours d’eau. C’est là que la Lea rencontrait la Tamise. À l’époque, cette dernière était plus large et s’étendait jusqu’au sud du site olympique. Les habitations découvertes étaient donc situées au confl uent des deux cours d’eau. « La Lea n’est pas une rivière unique, mais une série de canaux reliés à des marécages, des lagons et des lacs sur une surface changeant au fi l du temps. C’est un écosystème très intéressant. Les populations préhistoriques pouvaient exploiter la forêt et l’eau et c’est pour cela qu’elles ont décidé de s’y installer durant l’ère néolithique. « Il s’agissait d’un endroit très rude, ajoute Kieron Tyler. La menace d’inondation était omniprésente, mais ces gens sont restés malgré tout. Ils y ont vécu et y sont morts, car nous avons trouvé des huttes et des tombes. Mais le bon sens a pris le dessus. Les Romains sont arrivés et tout le monde a migré vers la ville. »
