paris doesn’t really have a tradition of going
out for breakfast. The shameful truth is that
many Parisians skip the meal altogether. When
they don’t they’re more likely to eat it at home,
or just bite into a croissant as they down their
espresso, standing at the counter of a café.
This is why the recently opened Twinkie
is great news for those who a) miss having
someone else make their toast in the morning,
b) wish to avoid the horrible buffet at their
hotel, or c) don’t see why breakfast should be
restricted to the morning hours.
Twinkie is all about breakfast, all day, every
day, and is the brainchild of a group of friends
who wished so much that such a place existed
that they went ahead and created it themselves.
Fresh-squeezed fruit juices, croissants and
assorted breads; eggs served with bacon, hash
browns, smoked salmon or cheese; scones,
pancakes, muesli. The formules (set menus)
range from €14 to €19, and are inspired by the
founders’ memories of travelling to America,
Britain, Israel and Norway – places where
breakfast is taken seriously.
They’ve thought to include gluten-free
and dairy-free options – rarities in Paris – and
if you come in at lunchtime and wish to have
something more, well, lunchy, you can opt for
a bagel sandwich, a salad, or the quiche du jour.
Twinkie has taken pains to source quality
ingredients: the eggs are organic, the bread is
by artisan baker Véronique Mauclerc, the produce
is delivered fresh every morning, the smoked
salmon is from Kaspia and the jams are either
from Burgundy or they are the handiwork of the
mother of one of the owners. You can’t get more
home-made than that.
Breakfast is served from 10am to 6pm, Tuesday
to Sunday; weekends get especially crowded.
Bagels from €10, salads and sandwiches €10-€15,
desserts €5-€6. Twinkie, 167 rue Saint-Denis, 75002
- LE PETIT- DÉJEUNER -
Breakfast in Paris with Clotilde Dusoulier
TWINKIE
Twinkie, 167 rue Saint-Denis,
