The Romans came along and everybody moved to the city.” Bateman maintains there is “continuity with those prehistoric waterscapes right up to the 19th century”. Archaeologists discovered a Victorian duck-hunting boat under the site of the main stadium. “The Victorians were doing the same as those prehistoric humans – exploiting the waterways,” says Bateman. “This goes through 6,000 years of London history.” Appropriately, some of those Bronze and Iron Age hut circles and burials were located beneath what will soon be the Olympic’s distinctive Aquatic Centre. The Olympic Park is so vast there was no way every part of the site could be evaluated, so archaeologists had to target where they should excavate. This process started in 2002, when research in anticipation of an Olympic bid began. Boreholes were drilled throughout the site to retrieve samples of soil, which geoarchaeologists used to create a 3D map of the land going back 6,000 years. This identifi es which areas were dry land and which were water channels at different points in the past. “Locations could then be identifi ed where excavation would yield the most knowledge. Deep trial trenches 20 metres long and 10 metres wide were dug. Excavations went down as far as 10 metres,” says Bateman. “They were built like inverted ziggurats [stepped pyramids] because you can’t build straight down – it isn’t safe. We peppered the Olympic Park with 140 of these trenches. In a handful we found signifi cant remains. These were turned into larger full-scale excavations, where we could carry out detailed recording.” These eight excavations turned up the important remains of prehistoric settlements and burials, including a Neolithic axe, which the team believe would have been deliberately placed in a river as a votive offering, and Bronze Age pottery. The team also recorded the Victorian industrial heritage of the site. “People have the idea that, unless something is very old, it’s not of interest, it’s not archaeology,” says Tyler. “But once something’s gone, it’s gone. The Lea Valley was a key site of the industrial revolution. A number of incredibly important processes were developed here and they served London, helping it become the world city it is today. “We take a holistic view of archaeology; it isn’t just what’s in the ground – it’s everything. So part of our brief was to record the 19th and 20th century industrial structures before they were lost. De profondes tranchées d’essai de 20 m x 10 m ont été creusées sur une profondeur maximale de 10 m, dit Nick Bateman. « Elles étaient en forme de ziggurats (pyramides à degrés) inversés pour éviter les éboulements. Nous avons truffé le parc olympique de 140 tranchées. Dans une poignée d’entre elles, nous avons trouvé des vestiges importants. » De ces huit principales excavations ont été extraits des restes d’habitations et de tombes préhistoriques, dont une hache néolithique, placée selon les archéologues en offrande dans une rivière, et des poteries de l’âge de bronze. L’équipe archéologique a également étudié l’héritage industriel victorien du site. « Les gens pensent souvent que si quelque chose n’est pas très ancien, ce n’est pas de l’archéologie, déplore Kieron Tyler. Mais La vallée de la Lea est un foyer de la Révolution industrielle. C’est là que des procédés importants ont été mis au point et ont fait de Londres la ville qu’elle est aujourd’hui.
