FRANKFURT AM MAIN
Frankfurt am Main, the bustling metropolis in the heart
of Europe, is known throughout the world for its exciting
contrasts. Situated on the majestic River Main, tradition and
modernity, commerce and culture, activity and tranquillity
are harmoniously juxtaposed, with international trade
shows and finance on one side and cultural and historical
landscapes on the other.
Frankfurt’s reputation as a city of culture is largely due
to its unique Museum Embankment, with 26 museums
clustered around the riverside promenade. On the final
weekend of August, museums take centre stage for one
of Europe’s largest cultural celebrations, the Museum
Embankment Festival. Stages, stalls and stands line the
riverside promenade, offering live music, international
culinary delights and first-class entertainment for all ages.
Oper Frankfurt has been voted Germany’s leading
opera house on several occasions. Frankfurt also boasts 60
theatres, including the continent’s largest English-language
theatre: the English Theatre Frankfurt, whose colourful
programme consists of musicals, classics and more.
Frankfurt’s favourite son is undoubtedly Johann Wolfgang
von Goethe. The Goethe-House, his birthplace, has been
lovingly restored to its original condition, showing visitors
the life and times of Germany’s most celebrated poet and
author. Nearby, St. Paul’s Church is where Germany’s first
national assembly met in 1848. Emperor’s Cathedral, site of
numerous Middle Ages crowning and coronation ceremonies,
is around the corner.
And then there’s Frankfurt’s most historical landmark,
the three-gabled façade of the Römer. This former patrician’s
house became Frankfurt’s town hall in 1405 and now serves
as the seat of Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor. Today, the Römerberg
marks the centre of the historical old town.
Whether at a lively street festival or in a cosy pub,
Frankfurt loves its apple wine. This cider-like drink has been
the locals’ beverage of choice for over 250 years. Another
cosy tradition is the Frankfurt Christmas Market. Over three
million people flock to the old town centre for this yuletide
classic every year, enjoying both the historical setting and
magical holiday atmosphere.
