Sargent and the Sea
Best known for his portraiture, American painter John Singer Sargent also had a great passion
for the sea, exemplifi ed in this dramatic rendering of Atlantic Storm, above. The fruits of two
transatlantic journeys taken in the 1870s, when the artist was barely out of his teens, this
exhibition reveals a young painter’s precocious talent. Also included are his famous depictions
of Breton fi sher folk, Mediterranean port scenes and later works from a selection of dazzling
watercolours he painted in Venice at the beginning of the 20th century. Tickets £10.

Gentse Feesten
Stay up all night with the rest of
Belgium during the Festivals of
Ghent (Gentse Feesten in Dutch),
the largest combination street
theatre and music festival in the
world, which attracts 1.5 million
revellers a year. Expect live

buskers, in outdoor squares and
stages across the centre of this
glorious mediaeval city, just 30
minutes from Brussels by train.
