Microprocessor The chip that holds the CPU in a personal computer.<br />

Minicomputer See under Hardware.<br />

Modem A device that converts signals from a computer to enable them to be transferred via<br />

a telephone line.<br />

Network A connection of two or more computers that allows users to share programs, data<br />

files, and hardware devices.<br />

On-line Direct connection of a computer terminal to the files and other equipment controlled<br />

by a central processing unit. The other alternative is a stand-alone system, such as a desktop<br />

PC. The most common use refers to being connected to the Internet (through a modem or cable<br />

access).<br />

Operating system The software that allows other programs to interact with the computer; a<br />

required basis of an application.<br />

PDA [personal digital assistant] A handheld or palm computer.<br />

Portal A site that serves as a starting point, allowing easy access to other sites.<br />

RAM [random access memory] Computer memory that is randomly accessed during computer<br />

operations.<br />

Reboot To shut down a computer and start it up again.<br />

Response time Elapsed time between an inquiry made at the keyboard and a response (such<br />

as a printout or data on the screen). Well-written programs and good computer management<br />

result in shorter response times, thus saving time.<br />

Server A computer on a network that manages the network resources; a server is required to<br />

access the Internet.<br />

Software The set of directions <strong>for</strong> an operation that is placed on a disk or computer program;<br />

a specially designed software program is needed <strong>for</strong> managing food service activities; other software<br />

may be needed <strong>for</strong> word-processing or spreadsheet activities.<br />

Spam Junk mail; unsolicited e-mail such as advertising and promotions sent to a long list of<br />

people.<br />

Spreadsheet Data displayed in a table. Unlike a database, cells (each item of data in the table)<br />

can show the results of a <strong>for</strong>mula. Replaces the use of accountant’s lined pads. Lotus 1-2-3®<br />

is the most popular business spreadsheet, but there are many clones (programs that are similar<br />

but different in cost or features).<br />

Stand-alone system A computer not connected to a network; a personal computer (PC).<br />

Upgrade To replace with a newer or better version of the hardware or software.<br />

Users’ manual A publication from a computer or software company that provides in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

on the operation, use, programs, and in<strong>for</strong>mation system.<br />

Virus A program used by hackers and sent to many computers through e-mail attachments.<br />

Viruses have the capability of destroying a computer’s hard drive and all of its files. An<br />

antivirus program should be installed on all computers, used frequently to avoid inadvertently<br />

downloading an invading virus, and continually updated.<br />

Wide area network (WAN) A network connecting distant computers.<br />
