<strong>the</strong> kitchen to see how <strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner is cook<strong>in</strong>g.. It was through this system that<br />

Northampton shoemak<strong>in</strong>g prospered. In <strong>the</strong> 1830s William Parker, one of <strong>the</strong><br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g Northampton shoe manufacturers had an annual production of 20,000<br />

pairs of boots <strong>and</strong> 60,000 pairs of shoes. One third of his production was sold <strong>in</strong><br />

Manchester while <strong>the</strong> rest found its way through <strong>London</strong>. This period of<br />

expansion co<strong>in</strong>cided with <strong>the</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up of premises outside <strong>the</strong> county. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1830s <strong>and</strong> 1840s several Northampton shoe manufacturers established<br />

branches <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r British towns. Messrs Hallam <strong>and</strong> Edens, for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>in</strong> 1840<br />

had wholesale <strong>and</strong> retail establishments <strong>in</strong> Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport,<br />

Leeds, Sheffield <strong>and</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham. In 1850, George Moore, ano<strong>the</strong>r Northampton<br />

shoe manufacturer, had branches <strong>in</strong> Manchester, Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, Glasgow <strong>and</strong><br />

Centralisation <strong>and</strong> mechanisation of production found <strong>in</strong> Northampton a<br />

natural space of application. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction of <strong>the</strong> sew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Blake mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> 1850s confirmed <strong>the</strong> pivotal role of <strong>the</strong> town <strong>in</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

However we have not to be tempted to see only cont<strong>in</strong>uity between what we can<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e a 'pre-<strong>in</strong>dustnal' experience <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrialisation. New forces were <strong>in</strong><br />

action. A series of protests aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction of mach<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>in</strong> 1857-59<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> expansion of production <strong>in</strong> Leicester. 10° While Northampton was<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g from hav<strong>in</strong>g a long tradition <strong>in</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

organised workforce), Leicester could only benefit from a new sector <strong>in</strong> a<br />
