evolution' has presented new questions for <strong>the</strong> paradigm of <strong>the</strong> British <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

revolution.<br />

It is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>the</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g sector with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> French<br />

economy is much more characteristic of <strong>the</strong> entire economy than for Brita<strong>in</strong>.<br />

While <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g sector was considered backward because of its<br />

low level of mechanisation <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrialisation, <strong>in</strong> France it represented a<br />

national concern for quality <strong>and</strong> taste with<strong>in</strong> artisanal <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial production.6<br />

Chapter 6 has exam<strong>in</strong>ed how next to differences <strong>in</strong> production <strong>and</strong> products,<br />

market<strong>in</strong>g practices assumed an important role <strong>in</strong> expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

<strong>the</strong> sector. Issues such as technological complexity or productivity rates have to<br />

be comb<strong>in</strong>ed with considerations on structural <strong>and</strong> strategic aspects of bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

practices.<br />

7.3 <strong>Paris</strong>ian shoemak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century<br />

From a technological po<strong>in</strong>t of view France <strong>and</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> did not present<br />

significant differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g sector. <strong>The</strong> same can not be said about<br />

<strong>the</strong> structure of bus<strong>in</strong>ess. While <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> by <strong>the</strong> mid-eighteenth century <strong>the</strong><br />

distributive structure had already achieved a high degree of sophistication, <strong>in</strong><br />

France <strong>the</strong> presence of wholesalers was extremely restricted before <strong>the</strong> French<br />

Revolution.7 <strong>The</strong> Almanac des march<strong>and</strong>s of 1770 reported only a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

Bonnecase, a 'pelletier-fureur' who "envois en Prov<strong>in</strong>ces chez 1 'Etranger" boots<br />

<strong>and</strong> shoes. 8 On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of <strong>London</strong>, a certa<strong>in</strong> number of<br />

retailers operated on a relatively large scale. An anonymous <strong>Paris</strong>ian shoemaker,<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stance, was able to supply <strong>in</strong> October 1758, 36 pairs of shoes to ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

shoemaker <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r 50 pairs <strong>in</strong> February 1759. By 1765 we f<strong>in</strong>d that his<br />

activity <strong>in</strong>cluded orders for 200 to 300 pairs of boots <strong>and</strong> shoes from various<br />

debate', Journal of Economic History, XLVII —3 (1987), pp. 649-69.<br />

An exception can be Pierre Anto<strong>in</strong>e Voltr<strong>in</strong>, a <strong>Paris</strong>ian bootmaker whose bus<strong>in</strong>ess failed <strong>in</strong><br />

1768. He had bebts for 19,574 livres <strong>and</strong> he owed 1,400 !ivres to a currier <strong>in</strong> rue de la Boucherie<br />

<strong>and</strong> more than 3,000 livres to a bootmaker <strong>in</strong> rue Dauph<strong>in</strong>e. His bus<strong>in</strong>ess was <strong>the</strong>refore based<br />

partially on production, but also on retail<strong>in</strong>g, be<strong>in</strong>g supplied from o<strong>the</strong>r bootmakers. AP, D4 B6<br />
