saddlemakers <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs who were part of <strong>the</strong> same cha<strong>in</strong> of production. In<br />

particular, <strong>the</strong>re were several cases of curriers, lea<strong>the</strong>r-sellers <strong>and</strong> cobblers<br />

2.2.2 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian Compagnie des Cordonniers<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian Compagnie des Cordonniers presented apparently opposite<br />

problems but with some similarities. <strong>Paris</strong> did not grow as much as <strong>London</strong>.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong> populous Faubourg Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Anto<strong>in</strong>e was not controlled by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Paris</strong>ian corporative system, it represented an exception <strong>in</strong> a situation where <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Paris</strong>ian guilds were still powerful.' 9 As already noticed with reference to <strong>the</strong><br />

lea<strong>the</strong>r market, <strong>the</strong> role played by <strong>the</strong> French State <strong>in</strong> organis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> controll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> guilds has been considered by historians as a negative factor that limited <strong>the</strong><br />

potential of <strong>the</strong> French economy. In Brita<strong>in</strong> guilds were normally <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

from political pressures <strong>and</strong> were often us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir power to obta<strong>in</strong> privileges<br />

from a state reluctant to actively <strong>in</strong>terfere <strong>in</strong> economic affairs. In France <strong>the</strong><br />

state acted <strong>in</strong> an opposite way when attempt<strong>in</strong>g to control <strong>the</strong> entire economic<br />

system. It is thus important to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> actions of <strong>the</strong> French state over <strong>the</strong><br />

Compagnie des Cordonniers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g trade. It was a Statute of<br />

161420, that established <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal structure of <strong>the</strong> company, with a syndic, a<br />

doyen, two maItres visiteurs, o<strong>the</strong>r visiteurs, two jurés du cuir tanné, two jurés<br />

de la chambre, four jurés de la visitation royale <strong>and</strong> twelve petits jurés<br />
